Being seen is everything. For those who have been banished to the margins of our society, being seen feeds the soul with dignity and a spirit of community. Mother Teresa once said, “The most devastating form of hunger is that of loneliness.” I have also heard it said that the opposite of love is not hate; it’s indifference. I know these things are true because I have lived them. To feel invisible brings deep sadness and affects our sense of purpose and meaning of life. But to be seen can revive our spirit. I have lived with the same person for almost 10 years, and this week she moved to a minimum unit. It felt like a family member moving out.
I think part of joy is not only what we feel for ourselves, but also for others. I wasn’t happy about losing daily contact with such an important person. Yet, that sadness didn’t keep me from feeling happy that her moving might get her out the gate a little sooner ...
